Discovering wholeness: How to embrace the fullness of being human

How often do you pause and feel whole?

Some of you can feel remnants of wholeness right now in your body. A physical memory so powerful and fleeting that you feel the call to pursue it, but you just don’t know what you’re looking for. Just one flash of bearing witness to wholeness and your life changes. You’ve been shown the fullness of life, you experienced it by being it, and you’ve been blessed and cursed to know that there is a reality to life that we’re barely living. Most of the time, we’re living an illusion created by societies that’ve been led by broken people perpetuating habits of the mind and heart cultivated by trauma that causes suffering. We’re generations of hurting people that are pulled by the temporary pleasures that numb the fullness of being human. And in our hurt, we hurt people. It’s a cycle of languishing.

If you’re lucky to be aware enough, you’ll recognize moments of wholeness. And to bear witness to it is the first step towards cultivating it. But how do you bear witness to it? This is one of many questions I am living with now.

I am on a path towards being whole more and more every day. It is a calling that I can’t turn down. Yes, I worry about money and image and safety, but there is a memory of wholeness that reminds me that I’m human, and to be human, is to be fully alive.

This wholeness is a fullness of self, body, and soul that is a process of loving acceptance. It is not easy but it is necessary. To accept all our experiences as part of our healing process. To stand in our vulnerability and be brave enough to look within. To heal the wounds of our past and to trust the experiences that have brought us to this point. This is the ongoing journey of wholeness.

In my exploration of embracing the fullness of being human, I look to science, psychology, philosophy, spirituality, theology, and the often neglected wisdom cultures of the past to better understand wholeness. I am starting this journey somewhat selfishly, as I am primarily interested in discovering wholeness for my benefit. But I am sharing my journey with others with the hope that it can help point you in the right direction toward your wholeness.

So, What is wholeness?

A definition can not get you to wholeness. Wholeness is experience. But words can help point you towards a path. Wholeness is a feeling of being fully alive and connected. It is a state of joy and contentment – an awareness of our connectedness to all that exists. It is an acceptance of ourselves and our relationships with others and the world. It is a feeling of peace and harmony with who we are, having a sense of balance and no separation from the world around us. Wholeness is an experience of being completely present and integrated within our environment, of being connected to divinity within ourselves. It is the resilience to be present with pain and fear and doubt but not give it the power to name who we are.

There are synonyms for wholeness. It correlates to terms like enlightenment, christ consciousness, peak experience, transcendence, unconditional love, higher self, the ground of being, oneness, and divine guidance. All of these are different ways of expressing the same experience.

You don’t need to be religious to experience wholeness. You don’t need to be a philosopher to experience wholeness. You don’t need to be rich or poor. You don’t need to be human. You simply need to be alive and aware.

The gift of being a human is that we can access this state of wholeness every single day if we allow it. It is a practice of consciously engaging in moments of self-awareness, connecting to our bodies, breath, and thoughts, feeling our emotions, and listening to the deep wisdom within ourselves and our physical environment. It requires patience, trust, and a willingness to recognize the beauty and love that is available within and around us.

To be whole is to end the loneliness for ourselves.

Over the next few months, I will be creating a series of posts exploring the various aspects of discovering wholeness. In each post, I will be discussing the science, psychology, philosophy, spirituality, theology, and the often neglected wisdom cultures of the past that help illustrates how to access, maintain, and live in a profound state of love, connection, and wholeness.

The topics we’ll be exploring include learning to trust ourselves, uncovering our emotional patterns, cultivating resilience, connecting with the divine, understanding our purpose, healing our hearts, and deepening our relationships with everything. We’ll learn practices that help us live in harmony with nature and align with our highest truth.

My hope is that the words I write will serve as a reminder of the rich tapestry of life that is available to us all and guide us home to the fullness of being human.

My wish for you is that you will be able to find moments of wholeness and that you will be blessed to carry those moments with you always.

You are not alone.

Welcome to the journey of discovering wholeness.

I hope you’ll join me.
